FAIR AND QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL

For too long Ohio’s leaders have allowed an unconstitutional, inequitable and inefficient school funding system to stand in the way of quality education in Ohio. While some schools are forced to pass substantial property tax increases to fund basic programs, many others cannot afford to keep up. It’s time to say enough!

As a public-school teacher since 2003, Amy will work across the aisle to improve Ohio’s public education system by overhauling state funding, reigning in standardized testing and the ridiculous, inefficient and ineffective statewide teacher evaluation system. Amy believes that teacher evaluations should be developed by and agreed upon by local school boards and their local teacher unions.

Amy believes in supporting community-based education reform based on the needs of local districts. Amy also supports a statewide minimum teacher salary of $45,000 per year and mandatory paid maternity leave for teachers. Too many of our teachers spend their lives caring for and teaching children, yet they can’t afford to take adequate time off for their own children. No teacher should have to neglect their own families because they cannot afford to take time off after giving birth or adopting a child.

Amy will work with students, parents, and teachers to improve our education system, including the wellbeing and economic integrity of those who teach, and support students and teachers, thereby giving our children the tools to succeed.

AFFORDABLE COLLEGE

The cost of higher education has skyrocketed. Getting a college degree shouldn’t bankrupt families and deter students from going to school. As your State Representative, Amy will support in-state tuition freezes, free community college tuition and free vocational training to stop the rising costs of higher education and job training programs. Amy is also committed to promoting build trades apprenticeship programs in high schools starting in the 10th grade. Amy is committed to ending the sales tax on textbooks and job training related expenses so that college students can cut down on the costs of learning.

CHARTER SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY

Amy believes that all of Ohio’s children deserve a quality education that provides them the opportunity to learn and grow to their fullest potential. We must ensure that Charter Schools are held to the same rigorous standards as traditional public schools. Amy understands that the current Charter School movement is little more than a legal way to rob taxpayers of the money we provide to properly and adequately fund our public schools. Amy will vote to ensure taxpayer dollars go towards public school classroom learning – not paid advertising and “consulting services.” We will require charter schools to comply with the same audit and public records laws as traditional public schools. With a reasonable, student-based approach, we can reform the system, save taxpayer dollars and provide the best education possible for our children.
